The Olsens at Le Comte Ory

3/25/11

Why are the Olsens so infinitely cool?  Here they are at a gala hosted by the Metropolitan Opera and Yves Saint Laurent for the premiere of Rossini's Le Comte Ory.  Whomever is on the left's (and I want to say that it's Ashley, because she was always supposed to be the "girly-girl" to MK's tomboy in their straight-to-VHS movies) outfit is my favorite, but they're both 70s low key and perfect.

Academy Awards Red Carpet 2011

3/1/11

It's Oscars time! As is well known, the 83rd Academy Awards were Sunday night. Congrats to the winners, but more importantly congrats to the 11 ladies (Anne Hathaway x2) featured above, as they are Les Deux's best dressed of this year's Oscar ceremony. No time for small talk about who won what; continue on below the jump for larger pictures and critiques.

NYC's The Place To Be

2/11/11

So we've made it to New York. So far it's been cold, dusty, confusing, and expensive, but totally great. Highlights have been meeting/seeing famous fashion bloggers like Susie Bubble, the Face Hunter, The Man Repeller, Mr. Street Peeper, etc., knowing that Tavi Gevinson was in the same building as us at the Vena Cava show, and, of course, hearing Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez speak (I even got to ask them a question, huzzaaah!). The IFB conference yesterday was awesome, in a word, and we'll be posting more pictures and info about it later, scout's honor.

SAG Awards Red Carpet 2011

My favorite looks (click to enlarge)

So the Screen Actors Guild Awards were two nights ago and I had a much more difficult time narrowing down a list of favorite looks than I did with the Golden Globes. I feel like the attendees really upped their wardrobe game on this one. As you can see in my collage above, this made my selection of noteworthy looks rather large. Since I don't want to overrun our page, the individual reviews and info on who's-wearing-what are below the jump.

Kate Bosworth at "Another Happy Day" Premiere

1/24/11

Can we talk about Kate Bosworth's outfit here?  Her Chloe dress with the leather bodice is great, but what really stole the show were her Isabel Marant pumps.  I love pointy toes lately, and these are a perfect example of the style done right.  Even in the second photo displaying the cutout back, my eyes went immediately to her feet.

MOMG MObama Wore McQueen!

1/21/11

We don't usually bring up the first lady's style on Les Deux.  Mostly because it is generally great and needs no discussion.  I personally loved this Alexander McQueen resort 2011 look that Michelle Obama wore to the state dinner for Chinese president Hu Jintao.  However, it seems to have caused quite a stir with fashion critics and designers alike, each of whom has their own analysis of the look.  Cathy Horyn of the Times and Robin Givhan of The Daily Beast both seemed to view it favorably.  Givhan went so far as to say that she thought it was, "a broad statement about the new realities of the fashion industry," and went on to describe in great detail exactly what the dress was communicating.  Oscar de la Renta, however, was not so pleased with the outfit.  As the dinner was about promoting trade between American and Chinese industries, ODLR found it in poor taste that the first lady chose to wear a European brand.

I find all of their in-depth reviews somewhat humorous, though.  Does everyone really think that every outfit Michelle Obama wears has to be a political statement?  I mean sure, when I saw that she wore red, I thought that could be a nod to China, but I didn't think much past that.  I might be totally wrong, but I just assume that when the first lady is wearing a great dress such as this, it's because her stylist brought it to her and she thought that it looked nice.  Or maybe I'm just too shallow to comprehend the intricacies of dressing politicians' wives.

McQueen Tribute & Fall 2008 RTW

Nick Knight's tribute to Alexander McQueen, which was shown at today's British Fashion Awards.  McQueen was honored at the ceremony posthumously with an Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award.  The above video features some of the designer's most iconic pieces, and is set to music by Bjork.  Knight was quoted as saying that, "[he] felt it was important to have the clothes featured one last time on flesh and blood," before they were to be taken to MoMA for an exhibition that will feature McQueen's work this coming spring.  Charlotte Cowles of the Cut accurately describes the video as simply, "haunting."

Watching this tribute piece made me reflect upon my own favorite Alexander McQueen moments.  While I have more than just a few, if I had to pinpoint my one favorite, it would have to be the first time I saw the looks from his fall 2008 collection.  As a naive fifteen year old, who thought she knew much more than she actually did about fashion, the images of this runway show affected me so profoundly that I never looked the same way at clothing again.  I distinctly remember being curled up on an old burgundy love seat next to my mother, reading what was probably my first collections issue of a magazine (W Collections, if I remember correctly), when the tiny pictures caught my eye.  I had never seen looks so avant-garde, yet so wearable, made of materials that I didn't know could exist in fashion.  Of course, the royally romantic dresses from this collection were what stood out to me the most at the time.

I was so excited about these clothes that I immediately had to discuss them with my mother, whom I'm pretty sure said that they were something along the lines of, "very lovely, but a little much for [her] taste."  More notably, I also told my mother that the yellow feather bouffant dress with tulle underlay worn by Lily Donaldson (top, left) would be my wedding dress, displaying what little I knew about fashion.  I'm sure that dress (quite possibly the only one ever made) is carefully stowed away in a temperature and humidity controlled storage room as I type this.  Anyway, I have much more realistic dreams for my never-happening-wedding dress now:

Queen Nicki

I'm not really big on listening to rap music other than the occasional throwback Snoop Dogg song, or the rare top 40 hit that's bearable.  But I freaking love Nicki Minaj.  She's the first female rapper to make a name for herself (to my knowledge) since Lil' Kim, and one of the very few who chooses to make public appearances without risking an arrest for indecent exposure.  Her voice is unique, her songs are undeniably catchy, but most importantly: look at the dress she wore to the AMAs!  You can't not love her in it.  It's almost McQueen-esque, no?

Update: the dress is spring 2011 Manish Arora

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

11/17/10
JAX

As we know, Billy Reid won the CFDA/Vogue grand prize on Monday, with Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo each earning a runner up title.  And that's all good and well, but what's really important is what everyone was wearing!  I had a lot of favorites, as expected, but there were definitely a few missteps as well.  Read on for some of the most interesting.

How freaking cute are Joseph Altuzarra and his mother?  I love her strange, almost Tavi-purple hair color.  The strapless dress with glasses and a watch looks so chic.  She is fantastic.

I Hate Halloween, Except...

11/1/10
KATIE

So Halloween is my least favorite holiday. Despite my overwhelming love of all things sugar-filled and dressing up in ridiculous garb, I've never enjoyed this creepy holiday.

That said, I do love witty costumes. And so seeing this shot of Brad Goreski from Lanvin's Halloween party really lessens my hatred for All Hallows Eve.

Tavi Gevinson. Genius. I wish I'd been that creative instead of quickly putting together a Zenon (Girl of the 21st Century) costume and then taking it off because of it's lack of wow-factor. Go Brad!

I hope everyone had a happier (and wittier) Halloween than I!

Another thing that really makes Halloween a little more tolerable. Oh, 30 Rock...

Go Global

Fashion's Night Out: The Show kicked off tonight's FNO festivities with an amazing 171 looks from seven subcategories, plus opening and closing numbers, which were meant to represent major trends for the already-upon-us fall season.  From the pictures that I saw, it looked to be really amazing, like a walking rendition of nine intense Vogue editorials, but it was unfortunately difficult to see a lot of the looks in their entirety.  Luckily for us non-New Yorkers, Vogue graciously snapped each look before it hit the runway and posted it on their website for our viewing pleasure.  Above are some of the looks from my favorite trend, "Go Global," whatever that means.  To me it looks like Nordic-Bohemia...

Anyways, if you're reading this site you likely know that tomorrow is the first official day of NYFW.  Be sure to check back often for pictures and reviews of all the shows we find relevant just as fast as we can get them to you!

Did Rachel Bilson make a quick outfit change in the middle of the fete for Vanessa Bruno's store opening in L.A.?  Nope, the left picture is Rachel, while the right is her doppelganger, Atlanta de Cadenet.  I know that everyone in the world has compared Mark "The Cobrasnake" Hunter's girlfriend and the former O.C. star, but really, when better to compare than when they are at the same event with the same damn hairstyle?  Oddly enough, although it seems everyone at the party took photos together, these two girls stayed away from each other.  They're probably sick of the comparisons.  Anyways, I'm kind of in love with AdC, even though I'm more partial to Ms. Bilson's outfit.  You'll definitely be hearing more about her from me.
