Blue and Yellow, Blue and Yellow

3/14/11

Love this photo, love the bag, love the nails.
Don't love the ashes that Girl is getting all over her precious Celine bag, but whatever, she owns it, she can tar its perfect beauty if she wants to!

All Over The Place

I know I've been absent from the blogging world for a while, but I'm finally on spring break, and therefore free for the next week. I figured I'd start off my blogging return by sharing the pictures that are littering my desktop and my brain; my fashion inspiration is a little schizophrenic right now, but it always kind of is.
Enjoy:

On The Fringe

3/7/11
What with the Fall collections almost done showing, it's time to start focusing on the trends they've produced. While there was a big emphasis this season on modern textures (like plastic) and 60's shape, there was the Native American influence that popped up from show to show as well. While I can delve into 60's style a little here and there, plastic is not my thing. I like sensual fabrics that move with the body. So you can bet I've been much more inspired by the Native trends for fall. Something I'd never delved into in that realm is fringe. It's fun and kitsch, but still, for the most part, wearable. It's a little more summery than it is cold-weather, so hopefully I'll be able to break out some mean fringe come May or June.

Don't Waste Your Youth Growing Up

2/20/11
I ran into this video at Like Cool today, and am super inspired by it. It's all that great 70's-meets-90's, California cool inspiration all rolled into one fantastic video. So I'm gonna go let my wavy hair down, throw on some bell bottoms, a sarcastic motorcycle t-shirt, and a cargo jacket, and wreak some havoc around town with my friends. While I'm doing that, enjoy Youth by Tommy Petroni.

A Peek at Fall

2/9/11
The Cut posted a slideshow yesterday of 65 designers' influences for their upcoming Fall 2011 RTW collections, and despite the fact that we weren't specifically invited to any shows, it's still fun to pick out the best prospect collections and pretend like we'll be seeing the actual clothes in person. Here are the inspirations that peaked my interest:

Band of Outsiders - "Sea Ranch"

Cushnie et Ochs - "Vagabond"

Erin Fetherston - "Mirage"

Max Azria - "Texture"

Rachel Roy - Nomadic

Vena Cava - "1994"

Hope you're all getting pumped for the best month of the year, cause Fall fashion week starts tomorrow

Spring 2011 Couture Streetstyle by Tommy Ton

1/26/11

As I'm sure most of you are aware, every runway show season Tommy Ton is employed by Style.com to snap images of fashion folk outside of the venues.  I've been noticing from the crop of pictures this season that people seem to be dressed down quite a bit.  Tee shirts have been seen in abundance, along with comfy looking hats, blue jeans, and even a pair of yoga pants.  Not that any of these elements are completely out of the ordinary (except maybe the Yankees cap), but things are definitely looking more relaxed across the board compared to seasons past.  Maybe I just feel that way because I haven't seen any shots of the infamous Anna Dello Russo in her amazing, over-the-top attire yet.

At any rate, the key to pulling off these laid back vibes, for me, is by choosing the right accessories.  Accessories are always important, but they're especially vital here, because picking out the right pieces is what keeps these outfits looking chic instead of sloppy.  A structure tote, an "it" coat, some minimal rings, luxe leather gloves, and a statement scarf all show that the above ladies put effort into their looks, rather than rolling out of bed and simply throwing on what was easiest.

Black/Navy/Brown With Envy

1/23/11

What a very nice look. This will definitely be what's inspiring my outfits for the next few days. I love the black/navy/brunette combo. It all feels very fresh and youthful, like a trendy sailor or something of the like.

Cuff 'Em

I found these Mr. Kate ear cuffs after seeing Jony's snake ear cuff over at Shout-Out To You. Super intense.
They're a feasible $28 without shipping and look killer in the gallery pictures. If I do throw out some cash for these, I haven't decided which color to get. Above are the antiqued gold and oxidized silver and below Rumi of FashionToast wears yellow gold and white gold.

Opinions?

Punk Is The New Grunge Is The New Punk, Etc.

12/24/10

A few years ago during high school my wardrobe was very much inspired by the punk aesthetic, but in recent years has shifted into grunge and then to woodsy, lumberjack, everything-I-buy-is-from-the-Gap mode. Lately though, I've been really missing that punk vibe and wishing to revert back to my old ways. That said, it's not so easy transforming my cord skirts and puffy down vests into a too cool for school uniform at the drop of a hat, so I've mostly just been oooh-ing and ahhh-ing over pieces I dream about owning, like these BLESS oversized safety pins.

I love oversized safety pins. There's something about them that's so overwhelmingly cool. And look how awesome the white one looks in this girl's hair. My hair is getting way too long, and I'm always looking for creative ways to wear it up, so this is definitely a selling point for me.

You bet yourself that I would pull $20 out of my savings for one of these bad boys. Post-Christmas present to myself from myself? Probably.

Black Swan, Black Swan, Black Swan...

12/19/10

Alternate Post Title: How Sick Of Me Is It That I Want To Become A Ballerina After Seeing This Movie? (Thanks Mulleavy Sisters)

I finally had the pleasure of going to see Black Swan with Jax tonight, as it finally made its way to Nashville after about two weeks of me cursing my non-proximity to a major metropolitan area. After spending the entire car ride home trying to create a summary of just how phenomenal and powerful this movie is (the acting, the camera work, the editting, etc.), I've decided that my simple words can do it no justice. It was psychological and forceful that I don't even think any words exist for it. All I know is that it may well be the best movie I'll ever see.

On that note, I do believe I have adequate words to describe the fantastic job that the Rodarte girls did on the film's costumes. While the tutus and stage outfits were phenomenal, it was the practice gear that really excited Jax and I. I've always thought that ballet clothing was really neat - lots of great, innovative layering - but the Mulleavy sisters take what is naturally cool-looking and make it look perfect. Never in my life have I longed this greatly for ballet clothing. Some of the highlight aspects in my mind were the great leg warmers usually worn only on one leg (and one arm warmer that was a clear nod to Rodarte's signature open-weave knit), a few long sleeved shrugs that seemed impractical but added a lot of depth to the outfits, and, most notably, the woven straps at the back of every leotard or top.

The pieces were incredible, and I speak for Jax and myself when I say that it would be out of this world if the Mulleavy sisters considered releasing some of the pieces for sale. While I'm not a dancer, I would definitely invest in some Rodarte dance wear at the drop of a hat.
