Woah, Coco, Woah

12/5/10
KATIE

So I hate to be gossip-y, but I saw this picture of Coco Rocha on Stockholm Streetstyle a day or two ago, and was a bit taken aback by how fragile she looks:

While her body isn't that different in size from any other toothpick-thin model, she looks far skinnier than any other shot I've ever seen of her.

In 2008, Coco opened up at the CFDA's "The Beauty of Health: How the Fashion Industry Can Make a Difference" shebang about how she'd dealt with eating disorders in the past and wasn't going to give into the pressure to be extremely thin anymore, even doling out this famous quote from an anonymous fashion industry jerk:

"The look this year is anorexic. We don't want you to be anorexic, we just want you to look it."

Coco Rocha during the Spring 2010 RTW season looking super healthy.

After she announced her newly healthy body image, the catwalk superstar clearly put on a little bit of weight. According to Coco, she went up the a size 4. Not a bad thing at all. I actually thought of it as encouraging to an industry that pushes its employees (models) and followers to strive for unreachable, unhealthy goals.

So now there's this picture where she's not looking to healthy (I believe whittled would be a good descriptor here). I don't want to jump the gun and start rumors when it might have been taken at a weird angle or the lighting could be off. But it seems to me that Coco is letting the issue of weight get at her once more.

Opinions?

Pretty Woman?

KATIE

In fashion, there's a fence somewhere between classy and trashy that can sometimes be hard to find. When does a low-cut Dior gown go from being a work of art to being far too sexy? At what point does the underwear as outerwear trend become sleazy as opposed to edgy? There are often beautiful, tasteful trends on runways that, when thrust onto the sidewalks of the real world, are seen as skanky. In a way, it's kind of high fashion's job to try to transform trash into something beautiful. High fashion is more of an art than simply the selling of clothes. And so the clothes on runways, as fantastic as they may be, are often unrealistic for the real world. It's not very often that something is unrealistic in the high fashion world though.

Like, potentially, these $2,000 Brian Atwoods.

Just my opinion, but these Atwoods are trashy, in the real world and in the world of fashion. I've never been to a strip club (thank God), but I imagine that if I did go to one, all the ladies there would be wearing these shoes as they pranced around in nearly nothing.

Despite my bad thoughts toward towering lucite, it seems that some deem the idea of hooker-esque shoes as trendy. Taylor Momsen (not that I think she's well-dressed in any way) wore some with dollar bill tips in the platform of the shoe and even Prada jumped on board with their lucite-jeweled Spring 2010 heels.

So what do we think? Lucite heels: a fashionable, artful way to delve into new trend territories or just plain slutty?

Cher Clutch

Because I know you were all dying to know, the obsession-worthy bag from Katie's previous post is the "Cher" clutch by Alexander Wang from his amazing Spring 2010 collection.  If you're really motivated, you can find this baby at about half price online, but trust me, it takes some looking.  And it's still gonna be in the mid three-figure range.

Spring Celine Shoes

I know that summer and the time for open-toed shoes is coming towards a close, but let's all take a moment to reflect on these absolutely killer Celine clog/wedge hybrids from Spring 2010 RTW that I failed to ever mention.  I mean, incredible, right?  This is also the first time I noticed that the material used on the black shoes looks suspiciously like velvet.  Very preemptive of you, Ms. Philo.

Obviously Miu Miu Spring RTW 2010 was a huge hit.  The now ubiquitous swallow print has made its way to sunglasses for the fall season.

Extreme Cat Eye Sunglasses

Among all the football-inspired awesomeness that was Alexander Wang Spring 2010 RTW, I may have overlooked some major important details.  Every time I view the collection there is something new that I love, and I will now take the time to redeem the err of my ways by addressing the Linda Farrow for Alexander Wang "Extreme Cat Eye Sunglasses."  It's not exactly that I didn't notice them ever, but I definitely never took the time to appreciate them until recently.  They're such a playful take on a classic eyewear shape, I just really cannot get over them lately.  These glasses are the perfect accessory to take an outfit to the next level by giving it a touch of whimsy. The "Extreme Cat Eye" is incredibly well made down to the last detail, with those adorable little metal corners.  My personal favorite color for them is the tortoise shell.  Absolute purrfection.

The Missing Link

jeffrey campbell via karmaloop

last fall after the spring 2010 balmain show i probably would have flipped for these, i had jungle/military on the brain constantly.  not as crazy about them now, but i can definitely see the clear reference...  anyways, can't even count how many times i've been compelled to post jeffrey campbell shoes here.  he just really is the absolute best, and at semi-affordable prices.

on another note, i'm trying to get back into posting more often.  i've been house-sitting for the past two weeks at a home without wireless (who knew such places still existed?), but i've finally wrapped up nine credit hours, and a job as a swim coach within the last two months.  i'm now down to only waiting tables, and when i return back to school i likely won't have a job at all.  so i'm not making any promises for now, but i will be attempting to pick it up.  if that's good for anything.

Copycat.

While it's often evident that stores like Forever21 and Wet Seal have their own semi-trashy and/or completely-trashy takes on runway styles, I've recently discovered that Modcloth clearly knows how to get runway to real way right.  I mean, not only did they have the perfect replica of the ChloĆ© boot, they have this dress, which is clearly a perfect recreation of what Dolce & Gabanna has been after now for two straight seasons. And for only $64.99? I'm blown away.

Twins? I think so.

okay, i was kind of repulsed by the denim/khaki overload which was spring 2010 ready-to-wear.  i mean, honestly, how many neutral collections can i view before i get bored?  the answer is about three.  so it was really too bad that maybe 70% (this is a totally biased estimate) of all the collections on style.com featured some sort of combination of these colors/materials plus army green.  after taking a step back from these collections, however, the denim shirt has grown on me infinitely.  the gap has some great and affordable options, thankfully:
