Prada Spring 2011 RTW

After watching the Prada's Spring 2011 commercial that Jax posted yesterday, I can't get enough of this look. I liked it enough on the runway, but thought it looked a little boxy. Seeing it move, however, is a different story.

The look is perfect from head to toe. The fact that the dress is super low cut could come across as either far too elegant or slutty, but since the hem is at the knees and the dress is so loose-fitted, it doesn't even delve into those territories. Paired with the similarly-striped sombrero(!) and those stacked shoes, there's no way this look couldn't grab my attention. It screams fun in very ridiculous, yet put together, way.

Look of the Moment: Black Friday, 2010

Yes, I know, our "Look of the Moment" section hasn't been updated in months.  And that is why, instead of being out shopping this Black Friday, I sit at home dissecting a new outfit for you all (it's not because the inevitably packed stores would kick my claustrophobia into overdrive).

Proenza Schouler's most recent show was the only one of the spring 2011 season that I watched live online, and I think that being able to gush to Katie on the phone over every look as it was walking in New York made the collection that much more special to me.  It was hard for me to pick one particular look that was my favorite, so I decided to try to pick one that really encompassed the feel of the entire show.  Some of the standout pieces were the tie dyed shifts paired with crafty, oversized necklaces, the bubble shirt a la 1999, and slip inspired dresses with ruffled details.  In the end, though, I had to go with this relatively simple skirt suit.  Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were quoted as saying that they "wanted it to be a little more polished," than previous collections, and that certainly was evident in the office-appropriate tweeds, Chanel box jackets, and mid-level pumps that littered the runways.  The boys kept their distinctive, Proenza-cool element by adding acidic yellows and greens to the palette, and keeping skinny belts low-slung.  The overall effect was a stunning array of pieces that would stand out in the board room or during a night out on the town.

to quote katie's description of the burberry resort 2011 collection, "they took two of my least favorite fashion things, ruching and crochet, and made me like them."  while i have an incredible amount of respect for say, the theatrical and intricate beauty of the late alexander mcqueen's dresses, oftentimes the looks that i am most drawn to are those that i desire to wear in my daily life.  and so, it is due to this fact, and in honor of my dear friend crochet-sherry from bonnaroo, that i introduce my long overdue new look of the moment.

with each collection he releases, christopher bailey impresses me more and more.  his ability to transform the once stuffy british house into a major fashion player once again within the past few years has been nothing short of astounding.  this look in particular just further solidifies burberry's place as a countryside beauty brand with a kick of rock and roll.  i love the unabashed use of brown and black together, and the shoes alone just make me die.  i can't tell for sure whether they're sandals with black socks underneath, or actual booties.  i was over wide belts until i saw this one which is just so well constructed.  i think i disliked them before only because of all the shitty pleather target ones i've been stuck seeing middle aged "hip" women wear for the past three years or however the fuck long.  and you know that the intricacy of the crochet detailing would be absolutely stunning in real life.  thanks, christopher bailey, for giving me an outfit to daydream about wearing while sitting outside at a restaurant in manhattan drinking a bloody mary on a sunday morning, slightly hungover and looking perfectly disheveled.

i had just been thinking of how i hadn't updated my "look of the moment" in quite a while, but i wanted an outfit to jump out at me instead of just arbitrarily choosing a new one.  that was when i came across the pringle of scotland fall 2010 RTW collection (expect my review of the entire show later on in the day).  this look is a beautiful representation of the collection: simple and organic, with a seventies silhouette which still retains a contemporary quality.  the pants have been cause for some debate between reviewers, but i am absolutely head-over-heels in love with them.  i've been coveting a well-tailored pair of trousers but cannot wear a skinny shape; it's like these are the pants of my dreams.  they're a little bit bohemian and look perfect with a tighter fitting top as worn here.  plus, the pockets are so big, you wouldn't even need to carry a purse!  as for the top, apparently it was made by weaving cashmere with a soluble yarn which dissolved when washed, leaving behind impeccable tiny cashmere squares (sure to be super comfy).  the army green on mustard works beautifully with the oatmeal colored bottoms, and gave the overall look an almost nostalgic quality.  and while i am totally, 100% anti-fur, i can really appreciate the fur gloves shown here from an aesthetic perspective; they add a little pluck to the outfit and are on par with fall's huge fur trend without being overbearing.  the bronze-y smokey eye, burgundy pout, and rosy cheeks play off the look and are simple without being too minimal.  and finally, to top it all off, this look is worn by hanne gaby odiele, who is one of my favorite models right now.  complete perfection.

after gushing over this stella mccartney pre-fall 2010 look to my friend ali, i decided that it had to be my new look of the moment. not only does it follow along with the themes showcased in stella's latest spring collection, it adds just a little hint of natural, sex-appeal to a gown that could easily come off as way too sexy. i love magdelena frackiowak's virtually unstyled hair and makeup-less face. i think that they compliment this really sensual gown in a way that's quite unexpected and quite lovely.

it's always hard to escape the gushing reviews of dior couture each season, so although i too was sufficiently impressed by john galliano's take on spring 2010 couture, i thought i would bring a slightly less well known designer to everyone's attention.  alexis mabille generally uses feminine archetypes in his collections, but his spring 2010 couture show marked a refreshing departure from the dominance of lace and frills.  while some questioned this sudden use of clean lines and simple tailoring as an answer to the recession (less risk and broader consumer appeal), but as mr. mabille explained it, "i was looking at cubist and suprematist art, and calder.  but yes, i wanted something cleaner, with less embroideries."  whatever the case may be, a majority of the pieces showcased his amazing skill in cutting and piecing his looks.  while some criticized that the show as a whole lacked a certain flow and theme, it's still difficult to not be impressed by his suits and eveningwear in isolation.  this look in particular (number twenty) is definitely my favorite.  the smooth blue material immediately connotes a peaceful breezy lake, and i love the detailing of the beading at the collar.  aside from that, i'm for some reason rather taken with the shoes in this collection, however plain they may be.  i also liked the weirdo half-dyed hair, and if you look at a close-up picture of this look, asia bugajska's eyes perfectly match everything, which was really just the ideal final touch.

so today while i was thinking about when the fall/winter 2010 RTW shows are going to happen, and then realized something that the fashion world always seems to make me forget: it's still technically only fall/winter 2009. isn't it funny how the shows can throw you off like that?

anyway, i decided i'd go back and review some of the shows from that season, and while checking out dsquared²'s collection, i came across this look and immediately wanted to share it. while it's obviously a great look just because it's so wearable (thanks for the great styling dsquared!), i'm much more enamored by the layering of the jackets. generally, one doesn't think to put a denim jacket under another coat, and the fact that dsquared made it look totally normal is really great. i also really love their leopard print coat. i go through 2 or 3 week long phases in life during which i either am completely in love with leopard print, or am just indifferent toward it. today, while looking at the latest post on fade to black (one of my new favorite blogs), i entered the stage of love.

back to the look... you don't normally see a leopard print coat in a blazer style, but it looks quite ravishing on ms. masha novoselova.

i'll quit dragging on...it's just such a great outfit..

so i want to start off by saying that i know this looks is a little ridiculous; yes it's like easter with the von trapps (sound of music reference), yes she kind of looks like a 3 year old in a model's body, yes it's way too early for all this pastel..

however,

i just got so into the spring-like weather (that has absolutely dissipated since my post this morning) that i started looking through the spring shows and this outfit stuck out to me. if you're going to ring in spring a little early, what a better way to do it than in a baby blue, ruffly dress, complete with embroidered flowers and sheer, white tights?!

while i'll quickly be the first to admit that, in pictures, this dress resembles the color of the brightest purple crayon i never used as a child (i've really always been into neutrals),

that being said,

sandra bullock killed it at the golden globes in this dress. it was absolutely stunning! the way the translucent bottom half moved when she walked created this gorgeous, magical effect. after doing some research to find out who she got this dress from (it was a surprisingly hard job), i figured out that it was from the bottega veneta spring 2010 RTW collection, and when i looked up the dress on style.com, this is what i found...

i don't know whether it's the fact that this is my first winter without the tanning bed, that it's been below 30 degrees for the past week (which is unusual for nashville), or something else entirely, but i've been absolutely summer crazed as of late.  thus, i give you my first look of the moment:

stella mccartney spring/summer 2010

i love everything stella does, right down to her adidas and gap kids collections, and her ss'10 collection was no exception.  it definitely took more of a feminine route than we usually see from her pieces, obviously with the oversized ruffles, as well as a slightly more streamlined tailoring in the opening looks.  the breezy silhouettes and patterns, especially at the end of the show, encompass everything i love right now.  even the styling was perfect.  i read that for the hair all the stylists did was blow-dry the models' already dry hair and run their fingers through it.  the makeup was also clearly kept to a minimum, by the looks of it only brown mascara, some blush, and pink to light burnt red lip color were used.

of all the amazing and varied looks i could have chosen from this collection, number 37 worn by natasha poly best suits my taste right now: young, girly, upbeat, and easy-going.  as i continue to dream of strolling around town somewhere warm and exotic, this is what i imagine i'm wearing.
