karlie kloss wore what was arguably the most beautiful gown in the elie saab collection, if not all of couture season thus far, to open his show. that is all.
jax dislikes...literalism
upon reading that giorgio armani had drawn inspiration from the moon, i thought of all the chic and elegant luminescent possibilities for his spring 2010 couture collection. but why did he has to include actual crescents on the pieces? i loved all of the lunar references; the subtle curves, pallid colors, and little ridges in the fabric meant to imitate the craters of the mooon were splendid. but the fixture of actual moon models as jacket fasteners, broaches, and necklaces just made the theme a little too literal for my taste.
granted, not all the looks included these little slivers. in fact, i really did think that mr. armani did a nice job; the theme rang true throughout and it flowed very well. this is something i can really appreciate in a show, because many designers lack the understanding that every collection needs to have a certain amount of cohesiveness.
as a side note, can we briefly discuss this dress?
the shape itself is fine enough, the color was fitting for the show, and the detailing is actually pretty spectacular. it looks like some sort of awesome couture bubble wrap when viewed in a detailed shot, and i wish i knew what it was made of. but what i have to take issue with is the lining. you would think with a dress where the inside would so obviously be showing, another form of material would be used. but for some reason, which i suppose was intentional in the design, they used this "plastic" (which is my boyfriend's guess as to what it was). and i'll just go ahead and say it, it looks damn cheap. my guess is that mr. armani so valued the exact shape of the dress that he didn't want to weigh it down with excessive layering underneath, but surely he could have picked something a little more visually pleasing. instead, he ended up with something that looks like it came from a costume shop.

riccardo tisci claimed that his inspiration for his spring couture collection for givenchy came from the sex-cat parisian of the seventies; while i really loathe anything but the hippie trend from the sixties and seventies, riccardo's play with bright colors was brilliant. i wasn't as thoroughly impressed with this givenchy collection as i have been with the brand lately; that said, there were a few looks that i couldn't resist posting.

this blacklight-bright blue ensemble really reminds me of some of alexander mcqueen's looks from his spring collection. i love the brilliance of the color.
i don't even know how this color was achieved; it's insanely purple.
while i rather dislike the fit of this dress (it looks as though the bust is falling off of the model), with a few adjustments to keep it up higher, i feel like this could be an absolutely amazing award show dress for a celebrity. agree? disagree?

it's good enough as far as a couture collection; but the concept behind it is what makes it special. ms. ann valerie hash has based this season's couture show on memories and clothing identity. apparently, she mailed out letters to people she respected asking them to send her pieces of clothing for her to rework. the first she received was a pair of pajamas from alber ebaz, and after that, admissions came pouring in. she ended up getting tilda swinton's vivienne westwood tshirt, jean paul gaultier's brenton shirt, charlotte rampling's spencer, a veil from diane pernet, a chanel jacket from daphne guinness, and pete doherty's drummer boy jacket. she took these articles and from them fashioned an entire collection based around fashioning them as a part of the looks. as hash explained, "i can't do couture like chanel or dior. of course not. but i [did] want to experiment in a different way."

as i promised in part 1 of this chanel spring 2010 couture rave, i am now posting some pictures (all of which are borrowed from style.com) which were by far my favorite looks from the collection.
i should correct my review of the show though; i felt there was a sort of robotic look in the models and garments, it was, however, extraterrestrial or astronomic. i'd say my bad, but aren't they just so similar?

katie likes...chanel spring 2010 couture
there will be no pictures of this collection yet because, while i adore vogue paris' website for having all of the couture pictures posted before anyone else, i much rather enjoy style.com's photos of the shows.
nonetheless, i felt i had to quickly write a review of the beautiful collection before all of these thoughts just floated out of my head and into space.
it was like an army of robot, princess dolls (that had just the slightest asian influence crossed over from chanel's pre-fall collection) covered in all kinds of sequin, satin, or silver available. at the first sight of freja beha's clonky, balenciaga-esque, silver heels, i thought this was going to be a rather unheard of futuristic collection for chanel; this thought was completely abandoned though, when the clothes clearly harkened to a certain level of elegance that could only have come from the past. while the omnipresent tweed suits presented at the beginning of the show, as usual, did not really appeal to me, they were still just as elegant as the overly-embellished suits, dresses, and gowns that followed. this is chanel at its highest level of opulence.
